Gisteravond weer gewoon gewerkt, het was erg rustig en dat was wel prettig, ik had een boek meegenomen, breien had ik even geen zin in. Vind ik ook raar, maar goed even na acht uur kwam er een man naar binnen. Ik schatte hem zo rond de tachtig. Hij begroette me en liep richting wc, maar vlak voor de deur draaide hij zich om en liep naar me toe.
‘Mevrouw,’ begon hij voorzichtig, ‘mag ik u iets vragen?’
Ik dacht bij mezelf, ja hoor heb ik weer, maar goed, ik knikte en lachte vriendelijk. ‘Het is zo,’ begon hij, ‘ik woon sinds kort alleen, mijn vrouw is overleden en dat vind ik heel erg.’ Ik keek hem medelijdend aan, maar zei niks. Dat hoefde ook niet, want hij ging verder met vertellen. ‘Ik mis haar heel erg, zeker omdat ze alles in huis regelde. Ze bewaarde ook veel spullen, héél veel. Nu is het zo dat ik die kwijt wil, het zijn allemaal spullen waar ik niks meer mee kan.’ Ik knikte weer en legde mijn boek demonstratief op het tafeltje, maar dat zag hij niet. Hij ging rustig verder. ‘Een goede kennis van mij zei dat ik die op marktplaats moest zetten. Ik dacht dat lijkt me wel wat, dus ben ik naar de markt gegaan, die is bij ons altijd op dinsdag en heb aan een van de verkopers gevraagd of ik die spullen ergens neer kon zetten. Hij keek heel raar toen ik dat vroeg, hij wilde ook weten wat voor spullen het precies waren.’
Heel langzaam begon bij mij het kwartje te vallen. MARKTPAATS! Die man had daar duidelijk nog nooit van gehoord!
Maar goed, hij vertelde rustig verder. ‘Ik heb hem verteld dat ik allemaal oude spullen had, serviesgoed, bestek en dat soort dingen en die daar neer wilde zetten omdat ik ze kwijt wil.’
Ik werd ineens goed wakker en nieuwsgierig: ‘En,’ vroeg ik, ‘heeft hij u kunnen helpen?’
Hij schudde zijn hoofd: ‘Nee, hij vroeg waarom ik die daar neer wilde zetten en dat vond ik raar.
‘Dit is toch een marktplaats zei ik?’
Hij zei dat ik dat verkeerd begrepen heb, het was iets anders, hij heeft het me uitgelegd, maar ik snap het nog niet. Weet u wat ik moet doen?’
‘Heeft u familie of vrienden?’ vroeg ik.
‘Ja, die heb ik, waarom?’
‘Ik weet zeker dat, als u ze vraagt wat het is u verder kunnen helpen. Ik kan niks voor u doen.’
‘Jammer,’ zei hij, ‘toen ik u zag zitten dacht ik dat lijkt me een slimme vrouw, maar dat is dus
niet zo.’ Teleurgesteld liep hij naar buiten. Achteraf vond ik wel grappig, zeker omdat hij dacht dat ik een slimme vrouw ben! Of was?!
Afgelopen donderdag was ik weer bij Joris. Nadat we koffie hadden gedronken vroeg hij of ik de kelder voor hem wilde opruimen. “Er staan heel veel lege dozen en zo, en omdat ik die trap niet goed op en af durf te lopen zou ik het fijn vinden als jij dat voor me doet.”
Nou, ik vond het geen probleem, ik dacht, dat doe ik wel even. Toen ik halverwege de trap was zag ik het al. De hele kelder stond vol, écht helemaal vol met lege dozen! Dus ik begon met ze te verscheuren en naar boven te brengen. Het was een heel gedoe, maar op een gegeven moment zag ik dat hij bovenop een plank in een donker hoekje allemaal inmaakglazen had staan. In eerste instantie vond ik het wel grappig. Mijn oma had die vroeger ook, maar toen ik nogeens keek zag ik dat er geld in zat. Allemaal kleingeld uit de gulden tijd, dubbeltjes, kwartjes, stuivers en ook nog guldens. Het was best veel, ik wilde er ook niks over zeggen, maar toen ik klaar met opruimen was ben ik er toch maar over begonnen.
Hij lachte en zei dat hij vergeten was ze op tijd in te leveren bij de bank.
“Laat maar staan, ik kan er niks meer mee.” Nou, dat heb ik dus ook gedaan. Aan dat soort dingen merk je dat hij een oude man is. Goed, hij kan er niks meer mee, maar dan nog, welk normaal mens bewaart nu geld in een inmaakpot?! Dat is echt iets van héél vroeger, toen deden ze dat ook, of onder het hoofdkussen of zo, want als ze het naar de bank brachten moesten ze daar belasting over betalen. Nu brengen ze het naar het buitenland. Maar dat heeft de fiscus inmiddels ook al ontdekt!!
Wat aandoenlijk van die oude heer “MARKTPLAATS” te zoeken op een markt.
En wat die wekpotten betreft, zo wil ik er ook wel een paar….
