Is er in verschillende soorten, de vrijwillige hulp die je iemand aanbied om ze uit de sores te helpen is er een. Je doet het met plezier, want als je zelf hulp nodig hebt ben je ook blij als je geholpen wordt.
Dat is vrijwillige hulp. Betaalde hulp is iets anders. Hulp in de huishouding bijvoorbeeld, de poetsvrouw waarvan je verwacht dat ze goed haar werk doet. Als je zo iemand hebt gevonden heb je geluk, houdt ze in ere want ze zijn zeldzaam. Goede werkgeefsters zijn ook zeldzaam. Het is alweer heel wat jaartjes geleden dat ik op zoek was naar een bijbaantje. Na lang zoeken vond ik via een advertentie in de krant een die me wel geschikt leek. “Gezocht hulp en de huishouding.”
Verder stond er niets bij, goed ik kon het proberen. Ik belde en kreeg een dame aan de telefoon die mij vertelde dat ze alleen woonde en een hulp zocht voor vier ochtenden in de week. Ik mocht op sollicitatiegesprek komen, dat was al iets. Wat prettig was dat ze redelijk dichtbij woonde. Dus ik stapte op mijn fiets en reed er naar toe. Daar aangekomen zag ik dat ze in een grote vrijstaande bungalow woonde. Ze was al wat ouder en maakte een sympathieke indruk. Ze vertelde wat ze precies van me verwachtte, ik moest huishoudelijke karwijtjes doen én als gezelschapsdame fungeren omdat ze alleen was en zich vaak eenzaam voelde. De kosten die ze voor mij maakte, kreeg ze vergoed van het ziekenfonds vanwege het feit dat ze reuma had. Ik zou negen gulden en vijftig cent gaan verdienen. Mooi, dat kon ik goed gebruiken om iets extra’s te doen. Van die reuma heb ik nooit iets gemerkt, wel van haar wispelturigheid en nukken.
Mijn dag begon met gezamenlijk ontbijten, leuk zou je zeggen, maar er moest ook gewerkt worden en voordat ik om twaalf uur naar huis ging moest er veel gedaan worden. Héél veel!
Allereerst de afwas, niet alleen die van het ontbijt, ook die van de dag ervoor, want die liet ze staan. Vuile aangekoekte pannen, smerige borden en een vuil gasfornuis.
Daarna was de badkamer aan de beurt, die moest ik met koud water waar een scheut ammoniak inzat schoonmaken. Het stonk vreselijk en sloeg behoorlijk op mijn adem, maar dat was nog niet alles. Op de badkamervloer lag vuile was, de vuile onderbroek bovenop! Die ‘mocht’ ik opruimen. Nou, het was even slikken, maar ik deed mijn best. Na de badkamer moest ik de keuken doen, ook met ammoniak! Tussen de bedrijven door kletste ze me de oren van de kop, en al heel snel leerde ik haar aardig kennen! Ze was zo onbetrouwbaar als het weer en erg ongeduldig. In haar zo’n woonkamer hing een grote kristallen lamp die ze graag schoon wilde hebben, een tijdrovend karwei. Eens in de zoveel tijd kreeg ik de opdracht eraan te beginnen, maar halverwege was haar geduld op en moest ik iets anders gaan doen omdat het te lang duurde.
Op een dag vertelde ze me dat ze een vriend had, waar ze die op de kop getikt had zei ze niet. Wel dat hij Willem heette en de weekenden bij haar doorbracht. Willem was gepensioneerd en een eersteklas sukkel. Vol trots vertelde ze dat ze het leuk vond om hem vol te stoppen met eten waar veel uien in verwerkt werden. Dat deed ze om hem te plagen, want Willem durfde geen winden te laten in haar gezelschap. Dus zat Willem het halve weekend op de wc, want daar durfde hij ze wel te laten. Nou, als ik Willem was, had ik haar in de bek gescheten, zeker weten!
Maar het mooiste komt nog! Op een dag vroeg ze mij of ik een brief voor haar wilde schrijven. Het was een belangrijke brief en zelf kon ze dat niet goed omdat ze niet mooi kon schrijven. (Pc’s hadden we toen nog niet.) Dus ik schreef de brief en nadat ze hem zorgvuldig had gelezen kwam ze tot de volgende conclusie: ‘Ik ben er achter gekomen dat jij veel te slim bent om dit werk te doen. Je moet een kantoorbaan gaan zoeken.’
Die kantoorbaan heb ik niet gezocht, wel een ander poetsadres. En ook daar vond ik ’s ochtends ook de vuile afwas van de avond ervoor. Ik voelde me meteen ‘thuis.’
Gelukkig hebben we tegenwoordig afwasmachines, scheelt een hoop gedoe.
