Zodra ze de sleutel in het slot hoorde wist ze dat hij het was. Ze was niet eens verbaasd, hij was net als altijd op tijd. Van de weinige goede eigenschappen die hij bezat was dat er een: stiptheid.
Ze was er helemaal klaar voor. Uiterlijk onbewogen zat ze in de grote fauteuil. Deze had ze express uitgekozen omdat hij met de rugleuning naar de deur stond. Zo zou hij haar niet direct zien zitten. Slechts een klein schemerlampje brandde in de hoek van de kamer.
Niets vermoedend stapte hij de woonkamer binnen. Ze hoorde hoe hij naar haar stoel liep en er achter ging staan. Hij schraapte zijn keel om iets te zeggen, maar ze was hem voor. ‘Hallo, Geert.’
Nu draaide ze zich om en keek hem aan. Ze zag dat hij schrok, vreselijk schrok. Paniek en angst maakte zich van hem meester. ‘Wat doe jij hier?’
‘Ik neem aan dat je mij niet verwacht had, maar iemand anders, een zekere Anja misschien?’Ze keek hem vragend aan, om haar mond speelde een flauwe glimlach.
Hij stond als vastgenageld aan de grond en staarde haar met open mond aan.
Ze maakte een uitnodigend gebaar naar de zitbank: ‘Neem plaats en doe alsof je thuis bent.’ Met zijn jas nog aan ging hij op het puntje van de bank zitten.
Ze wilde hem enkele seconden de tijd geven om zich te herstellen, voordat ze genadeloos zou toeslaan.
Langzaam haalde ze een sigaret uit haar pakje en stak hem met veel omhaal aan. Uitdagend blies ze de rook uit en sloeg demonstratief haar benen over elkaar. Ze zakte een beetje onderuit in de stoel en deed bewust een mislukte poging om haar rokje recht te trekken.
Nu keek ze hem echt aan en zag de angstige blik. Dit was goed, nu was het haar beurt. Zij was aan zet. Ze stak haar geopende hand naar hem uit en zei: ‘Voordeursleutels inleveren, allebei. Hier ben je niet meer welkom, en thuis ook niet. Morgen kun je spullen komen halen, die ik voor je klaar heb gezet. De rest regel ik via mijn advocaat.’ Haar stem klonk kil en zakelijk.
‘Dat meen je niet, je bent gek, volslagen gek. Ik zou niet weten waarom, trouwens wat doe je hier, hoe kom je hier terecht?’
‘Dat is niet belangrijk’’, antwoordde ze. ‘Belangrijker is dat jij nu doet wat ik zeg. Tenzij je een schandaal wilt. Dat kan ik je bezorgen, geen probleem.’ Haar stem klonk nog steeds kil en zakelijk.
‘Jij, wilt mij een schandaal bezorgen, jij? Laat me niet lachen, hoe wil je dat doen?’
‘Ik kan naar de krant stappen en daar een aardig verhaaltje vertellen. Verkrachting in het huwelijk, pedofilie, een bankrekening in het buitenland waar al je zwart geld op staat, nog meer?’
‘Dat durf je niet, je bluft.’ Zijn stem klonk schor van emotie, zijn ogen fonkelden verdacht gevaarlijk. ‘Je hebt geen poot om op te staan.’
‘Oh nee? Daar zou ik maar niet te zeker van zijn. Verkrachting in het huwelijk kan ik bewijzen met die videoband die we gemaakt hebben voor een paar jaar terug.’
Hij vloog overeind: ‘Dat wilde je zelf ook, het was een spelletje: je weet dat ik dat niet echt meende, bovendien vond je het toch prettig, of niet soms?’
Ze knikte: ‘Ja, maar op de band komt het anders over daar gaat het om, en wat die bankrekening betreft hoef ik niet te zoeken die is er gewoon, rest enkel nog de pedofilie. Daar heb ik een getuige voor.’
‘Jij hebt helemaal niks, je kletst uit je nek’ Woest stapte hij op haar af en ging dreigend voor haar staan. ‘Nu ga je te ver, echt te ver.’ Hij trok haar overeind en schudde haar driftig door elkaar.
‘Kijk uit wat je doet anders komt er nog mishandeling bij’, zei ze en duwde hem naar achteren.
‘Je kunt me van alles betichten, maar niet van pedofilie,’ schreeuwde hij.
‘Ons buurmeisje doet veel voor geld, heel veel.’ Ze keek triomfantelijk.
‘Dat meen je niet, die slettebak van ons naast doet het met Jan en Alleman, dat kind is totaal bedorven, zo gemeen ben je niet, dat kan niet.’
Hij was weer gaan zitten en op zijn voorhoofd verschenen zweetdruppeltjes: angstzweet. Ze constateerde het met zichtbaar genoegen.
‘Zo gemeen hoef ik niet te zijn, als jij doet wat ik vroeg. Je geeft mij de huissleutels en ik ga niet naar de krant. Wij gaan scheiden, ik krijg het huis plus een flinke alimentatie en jij werkt verder aan je opkomende politieke carrière. Een nieuwe vriendin zul je wel zo vinden, en slapen kun je overal, dus wat doe je?’
Hij keek zijn vrouw aan alsof hij haar voor de eerste maal in zijn leven zag.
‘Waarom doe je dit, waarom wil je me alles afpakken, alleen omdat ik een vriendin heb? Dat heeft niets te betekenen, ik houd niet eens van haar, het was enkel seks, meer niet.’
‘Ik dacht dat je van me hield’, hoorde hij plots een bekende stem. In de deuropening stond Anja. ‘Geef die sleutels maar aan ons, je kunt gaan, ik weet genoeg.’
‘Anja, ik kan alles uitleggen’, begon hij haperend.
Anja ging naast zijn vrouw staan en schudde haar hoofd. ‘Doe geen moeite, Geert, ik heb genoeg gehoord.’
Geert keek van de een naar de ander en dacht koortsachtig na.
Uiteindelijk haalde hij zijn sleutelbos te voorschijn en nam er twee sleutels vanaf. Hij legde ze op tafel en liep met gebogen hoofd naar buiten.
Zodra de deur dicht was vielen ze in elkanders armen. ‘Het is voorbij, eindelijk.’ Anja streelde haar vriendin liefdevol over haar hoofd. ‘Je hebt je kranig gehouden, ik heb met bewondering naar je gekeken, alleen was ik even bang dat hij je iets wilde aandoen. Dan had ik moeten inspringen en was waarschijnlijk alles mislukt. Ik moet er niet aan denken, al die smerige dingen die ik met hem in bed heb moeten doen waren dan voor niets geweest Gelukkig is het goed afgelopen voor ons, we hebben elkaar en jij bent hem eindelijk kwijt.
Ik haal even de champagne uit de ijskast, die hebben we wel verdiend.’
Met opgeheven glazen en een innige omhelzing proostten ze op elkaar en de toekomst.
