Het gesprek met Jeroen had me echt aan het denken gezet. Ik vond het best een goed idee. Had er ook over nagedacht hoe ik het ’t beste kon doen. De vragen die ik wilde stellen had ik goed in mijn hoofd geprent. Ik had er echt zin in.
De eerste die afgelopen zaterdag naar binnen kwam was een man, ik schatte hem ergens rond de zestig. Hij knikte vriendelijk en ging naar het toilet, ik wachtte geduldig en toen hij zijn handen ging wassen vroeg ik: ‘En hebt u het naar uw zin?’
Hij keek me heel erg verbaasd aan, knikte vriendelijk en zei: ‘Nu wel weer.’ Hij legde vijftig cent op het schoteltje en ging weg. Goed, ik was niet blij, maar het was nog vroeg. De volgende die kwam was ook een man, een stuk jonger en zag er goed uit. Deftig gekleed en zo, je kent die types wel. Toen hij zijn handen ging wassen dacht ik misschien moet ik een andere vraag stellen. Dus ik vroeg of alles naar wens was. Hij draaide zich naar mij toe en schudde zijn hoofd. ‘Nou, nee, het toiletpapier is op, misschien moet u daar eens op letten.’ Ik schrok en zei: ‘Het spijt me,’ meer niet. Hij ging weg zonder iets te geven. Dus toen hij weg was heb ik eerst het toiletpapier bij gevuld en nagedacht.
Een poosje later kwam weer iemand, een vrouw en ze keek kwaad, dat viel me op. Net toen ik iets wilde zeggen keek ze me aan en zei: ‘Doe ik iets verkeerd of zo dat u me zo zit aan te staren?’ Ik schudde mijn hoofd en zei: ‘Nee, hoor.’ Ze haalde haar schouders op en ging weer. Nou, ik dacht ik probeer het nog één keer, dan houd ik er mee op. Net op dat moment kwam weer een man naar binnen, dus toen hij klaar was en zijn handen ging wassen vroeg ik of het eten goed gesmaakt had. Hij keek me aan en zei: ‘Ik vind dit een impertinente vraag, als ik u was zou ik me maar bezig houden met het schoonmaken van de toiletten, dat is uw werk,’ toen draaide hij zich om en liep weg. Van schrik heb ik heel lang niks meer gevraagd. Dat woord impertinent snapte ik niet, ik had dat nog nooit gehoord. Maar intussen heb ik het opgezocht en nu weet ik het, het betekent brutaal.
Op het eind van de avond kwam een jong meisje naar binnen en net toen ik dacht, ik vraag niks meer keek ze me heel vriendelijk aan en zei: ‘Vindt u dit nu leuk werk?’
Ik knikte en dacht, kijk nu kan ik mooi een praatje maken. Ik lachte heel vriendelijk en zei dat ik het wel leuk vond. ‘Het is ook erg afwisselend.’
Ze keek me aan en begon heel hard te lachen. ‘Dit is echt leuk, dit moet ik onthouden en op facebook zetten. Ik weet zeker dat mijn vrienden zich rotlachen. Afwisselend werk, het is niet te geloven, dat meent u niet. Wat is hier nu afwisselend aan? Het enige afwisselende is dat u verschillende wc’s moet schoonmaken!’
Ik was niet blij en zei: ‘Dat hoort erbij, maar ik kom wel onder de mensen, daar gaat het om.’
Ze keek om zich heen en lachte nog steeds. ‘Ja, maar het is toch een strontbaan.’ Ze grijnsde en liep weg zonder te betalen, dat vond ik nog het ergst. Ik ben blij dat ik Jeroen netjes heb opgevoed. Die zou zoiets nooit doen.
Ik heb hem ook nog opgebeld en verteld wat er gebeurt was. Hij zei dat ik me het niet moest aantrekken. ‘Overal is wel wat, je zult zien dat er ook leuke mensen komen. Wacht maar af.’
Nou, ik weet het niet, ik hoop het wel.
Het is ook moeilijk om gepaste vragen te stellen. Ze zal in de toekomst nog best wel leuke mensen tegen komen.
