Hij vroeg of ik nog iets ging doen. Dat ik het niet vierde vond hij jammer, maar begreep het wel. ‘Het is jammer dat je werken moet, anders was ik wel komen koffie drinken.’ Ik zei dat ik het zelf ook jammer vond en heb met hem afgesproken om van de week samen iets leuks te gaan doen, gewoon met ons tweetjes ergens een hapje gaan eten en bijkletsen. Of ik Wim ook meeneem weet ik nog niet. Jeroen vroeg er in elk geval niet naar, maar dat kan nog komen natuurlijk. Wat ik dan doe weet ik nog niet, ik heb in elk geval geen zin om hem mee te nemen. Zeker nu niet. Hij had een cadeau voor me en dat was wel een teleurstelling, zeker omdat ik weet dat hij daar geld voor had. Tenminste dat zei hij toen ik het in zijn broekzak zag zitten. Honderd euro die hij zogenaamd apart had gehouden om iets voor me kopen. Nou, hij feliciteerde me, gaf me onhandig een kus en een cadeaubon van 25 euro voor het Kruidvat.
Even kreeg ik de neiging om een opmerking te maken, maar dat heb ik niet gedaan. Ik bedankte hem en zei verder niks meer. Hij vroeg ook niks, dus ben ik me gaan douchen en heb nagedacht over Ruud. Hij wist niet dat ik jarig was, dus dat was wel grappig en kwam me ook goed uit. Toen ik me aangekleed had ben ik naar buiten gelopen en hem gebeld. Gelukkig was hij thuis. Ik vertelde hem, dat ik voordat ik moest werken even bij hem langs kwam om iets te bespreken. ‘Het is iets leuks,’ zei ik, meer niet. Daarna ben ik terug naar binnen gegaan en Wim verteld dat ik onverwacht eerder moest beginnen. ‘Het is niet leuk,’ zei ik poeslief, ‘maar het moet, we vieren mijn verjaardag toch niet, dus amuseer je maar.’ Hij zei niks, maar knikte alleen maar, wel keek hij naar mijn kleding. Ik had een leuk jurkje aangetrokken omdat ik daar zin in had. ‘Ja,’ zei ik voordat hij iets kon zeggen, ‘ik weet dat ik werken moet, maar ik ben ook jarig, daarom heb ik me feestelijk aangekleed.’ Ik dacht, ben ik meteen van het gezeur af voordat hij een stomme opmerking maakt.
Toen ik eenmaal weg was heb ik eerst mijn baas gebeld. Ik zette een zielig stemmetje op en vroeg of hij het erg vond als ik niet kwam werken. ‘Ik ben ziek,’ begon ik, ‘keelpijn en vreselijke hoofdpijn, ik vind het heel erg voor u, zeker omdat het zondag is.’ Even hoorde ik niks, maar toen zei hij dat het voor een keer niet zo erg was. ‘Het is niet anders, ik wens je strekte en beterschap.’
Opgelucht en blij ben ik meteen doorgereden naar Ruud. Hij was écht blij toen hij me zag binnen komen, dat zag ik aan zijn gezicht, hij straalde. Ik gaf hem een zoen en zei: ‘Ik kom hier bij jou mijn verjaardag vieren, hoe vindt je dat?’
Nou, dat sloeg in als een bom. Hij zei wel tien keer achter elkaar, ‘dat meen je niet!’
Nadat hij van de schrik bekomen was hebben we het uitgebreid gevierd. In bed natuurlijk!
