Het woord beroep wordt volgens mij bijna niet meer gebruikt. Meestal zeggen we werk of baan of zoiets, maar beroep doet vaak aan andere dingen denken. Zoals ergens een beroep op doen. Vroeger werd dat wel gebruikt. Tenminste in mijn jeugd. Als een meisje een jongen thuis wilde voorstellen wilden de ouders eerst weten óf hij katholiek was én wat voor beroep hij uitoefende. Dat was belangrijk, ook wat zijn vader deed. Nu ben je blij als je werk hebt, ook al is het niet dat, wat je graag zou willen doen.
Je hebt ze in alle varianten: leuke, vieze, noodzakelijke en nog veel meer.
Een vies beroep vind ik pedicure, het lijkt me drie keer niks. Elke dag opnieuw blote voeten op je schoot die je ‘mag’ verzorgen. Ook al zijn ze schoon, voeten stinken! Zo zijn er nog meer vieze beroepen. Vroeger liepen mannen achter een stinkende vuilniswagen aan om de rotzooi van anderen erin te pleuren. Nu gaat dat anders. En wat dacht je van mensen die een lijk moeten opfrissen voordat het in de kist komt? Of verpleger in een ziekenhuis? In het dierenasiel heb je ook niks te lachen, goed het is dankbaar werk, maar stront opruimen moet je wel willen. Toch zijn er mensen die dat zelfs vrijwillig doen. Vrijwilligerswerk heet dat en wordt door veel mensen belangeloos gedaan. Heel mooi, maar vooral erg dankbaar werk. Die mensen verdienen geen geld maar wel een pluim.
Leuke beroepen lijken mij filmster, fotomodel, verkoopster, fotograaf, of mannequin, maar ook die hebben ongetwijfeld ook nadelen. Ieder beroep heeft dat.
Roeping is weer iets anders. Kloosters zaten vroeger vol met mensen die door God geroepen waren om hun leven aan hem te wijden. Sommigen vertrokken naar de missie om goed werk te doen. Weer anderen dachten dat ze ook goed werk in hun eigen buurt konden doen. Hoewel veel van hen veel aan zichzelf dachten, en niet aan God. Dat HIJ alles ziet vergaten ze vaak, of dachten dat HIJ net even niet oplette.
Een heel andere vorm van vrijwilligerswerk is het geloof verkondigen van deur tot deur. Getuigen van Jehova doen dat, die denken dat ze een roeping hebben. Ze bellen aan met de mededeling dat ze God en het licht komen brengen. Heel irritant en erg opdringerig zijn die mensen. Op het moment dat ze voor je neus staan en je realiseert wat ze komen doen kan en wil je nog maar een ding doen: De deur dichtsmijten, doe je dat niet, sta je daar uren hun gezever aan te horen. Ik kan erover meepraten.
Het ging als volgt: Kort na het overlijden van mijn man kreeg ik veel bezoek en aanloop van mensen die me graag wilden ondersteunen. Omdat mijn kinderen nog jong waren en het leuk vonden om de deur open te maken als de bel ging mochten ze dat.
Zo ook, op een zondagochtend. Het was rond de klok van elf toen de bel ging. Mijn oudste zoon Frank ( hij was net zeven jaar) mocht openmaken. Ik zat in de woonkamer en hoorde hem praten, nieuwsgierig spitste ik mijn oren. Maar dat was niet nodig, want even later ging de kamerdeur open en stonden er twee vreemde mannen in de deuropening. Ze begroeten me met de woorden: ‘Uw zoontje was zo vriendelijk ons binnen te laten.’ ( Ja, netjes opgevoed was hij!) Wij zijn getuigen van Jehova en komen u goed nieuws brengen.’
Het eerste dat ik dacht was: Kut en nogeens Kut, hoe krijg ik die nu heel snel weg? Maar goed, ik stond op gaf ze netjes een hand lachte vriendelijk en zei: ‘Dat vind ik heel fijn, maar u komt erg ongelegen, ik sta op het punt om weg te gaan, ik heb een afspraak die ik niet kan afzeggen, als u nu volgende week zondag om dezelfde tijd terug komt maak ik tijd voor u vrij.’ Het was het eerste dat me inviel! En…ze trapten erin! Niet te geloven, écht waar!
Ze gingen en beloofden de volgende week om de zelfde tijd terug te komen. Nadat ze weg waren heb ik eerst Frank verteld dat hij niet iedereen zomaar binnen moest laten. ‘Roep mij maar voordat je iemand binnen laat.’ Goed, dat was dat.
Hoe het afliep? In totaal heeft het zo’n zes tot zeven weken geduurd dat wij met ons drietjes op zondagochtend onder de keukentafel verstopt zaten als de bel ging! Mijn kinderen vonden dat helemaal geweldig en spannend, logisch ook!
Ik vond het niet spannend, maar hoogst irritant. Uiteindelijk zijn ze GOD ZIJ DANK weggebleven!
Roeping kan mooi zijn! Kan, maar niet altijd!
